iPhone 17 Price: How Much Will It Cost?

“It’s Glowtime” was the tagline for the special Apple Event held on September 9 2024, where tech enthusiasts (including us!) got their first glimpse of the iPhone 16. And with the iPhone 17 launch quickly approaching, this year should be no different.

We expect Apple to debut the latest iPhone in early September 2025 at a similar event to last year, where the details on upcoming releases will become much clearer. For now, we know that there’s likely to be four models in the series: two iPhone 17 Pro Models, a new Air model, and, of course, the base iPhone 17.

From Qi 2.2 wireless charging compatibility to a redesigned camera system, there are already plenty of rumors and leaks circulating about what to expect from the latest Apple iPhone. But one thing we won’t have details on until announcement day is the iPhone 17 price. Here’s what we know so far.

How Much Did the iPhone 16 Cost?

While it’s not always a complete giveaway for the iPhone 17 price, knowing how much the previous model cost can provide some clues. The current iPhone 16 series offers five devices, including the budget-friendly iPhone 16e.

What Price Will the Apple iPhone 17 Be?

President Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on smartphones produced outside the US. This tariff initially applied to just those made in Japan and South Korea, two major US tech suppliers, which is why Apple moved most of its manufacturing to China.

However, new terms mean that it would now apply to all imported smartphones, with an additional 55% tariff on imports from China, plus a potential 26% one on those from India.

This could have a significant impact on the price of the iPhone 17 and would likely be reflected in the final consumer cost.

For instance, the standard iPhone 17 with import tariffs from China or India would start at $1,000+ based on the iPhone 16’s price. The premium iPhone 17 Pro Max could cost more than $2,400!

However, Trump’s self-imposed deadline has now been delayed, providing more time for Apple to make deals that would lower these tariffs before the September announcement. Many experts also suggest that a global product-specific tariff is unlikely to stand up in court, particularly if the current administration justifies it under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Regardless of whether or not tariffs are imposed, the iPhone hasn’t seen a price hike in 5 years. That means changes are due, particularly with the addition of the new ultra-slim Air model and upgraded features, including increased RAM, iOS 19, and Apple Intelligence improvements. Together, these factors could potentially justify a higher price tag.

Or, Apple could go the opposite way and keep the same price strategy, which has worked well for the past 5 years!

What About the iPhone 17 Air?

Rivalling the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, the new iPhone 17 Air is expected to be Apple’s thinnest phone yet. This device is expected to directly replace the Plus, meaning it could have a similar $900 price tag.

However, earlier reports suggested that the Air model could be even more expensive than the Pro, even before any tariffs are applied.

How to Save Money on the iPhone 17 Price

Have you got an old iPhone lying in the back of a drawer? If you’re unsure of its value or don’t have the time to sell, try trading it in instead. In return for refurbishing the phone or recycling its parts, Apple provides a discount on the price of a new phone — potentially including the iPhone 17.

Apple often increases trade-in value for various iPhone models, so keep an eye out at the Apple store and other mobile retailers for the latest offers.

What to Expect from the Apple iPhone 17

The Apple iPhone series has seen some modest upgrades over the past few years, and the iPhone 17 is likely to follow suit. To help you decide whether to upgrade in September, let’s take a closer look at some of the device’s rumored and leaked features:

Design & Display

With no big plans for a shake-up until next year’s 20th anniversary, the iPhone 17 will more than likely keep a similar design to its predecessor. This includes aluminum frames and frosted glass backs, plus the iconic Dynamic Island at the top of the screen.

However, it could have a larger 6.3-inch display, which would slightly increase the phone’s total size. This may feature ProMotion support for a smoother 120Hz refresh rate, upgraded from the standard 60Hz.

New color options may also be added compared to the iPhone 16, from Green, Purple, and Light Blue for the base model to a new Orange copper tone for the 17 Pro.

Cameras

Images leaked of the Apple iPhone 17 back in January showed a new pill-shaped camera bar, which looks incredibly similar to the Google Pixel 9. Later CAD renders pointed to a horizontal arrangement, with larger rectangular bars for the Pro models.

The Front Selfie camera is also likely to be upgraded to 24MP on all models, marking a considerable improvement from the iPhone 16’s 12MP lens.

Battery & Performance

We already know what to expect for Apple’s next iPhone operating system from the public beta preview of iOS 26.

iOS 26 will bring a Liquid Glass interface to the iPhone 17, offering a transparent, lens-like look. It also features an Adaptive Power Mode, which makes small performance adjustments for an improved battery life. For example, this mode may lower your brightness or allow some activities to take a little longer when the battery is low.

We may also benefit from faster charging speeds, thanks to the development of two new MagSafe chargers that are compatible with the Qi 2.2 wireless charging standard.

While rumors on whether the iPhone 17 will keep the 16’s A18 chipset or receive a smaller A19 chip are conflicting, the entire lineup could come with 12GB of RAM. This would support the use of Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI software, on a large scale, although we’re unsure whether the 12GB will be limited to the Pro models.

Final Thoughts: Is it Worth the Price?

Whether or not tariffs are imposed, the iPhone 17 is more than likely to start from at least $799, with the Air and Pro models having a more premium price tag.

The iPhone 16 will likely see discounts across several retailers when the iPhone 17 drops, which is expected to be next month. So, it may be worth holding out until September to either purchase the latest device or enjoy discounted models from previous generations!
